Athol Bayne Candidate Waikouaiti Community Board

My aim if I am elected is see the community grow in ways that are not only safe but enterprising ways that will enable more employment and opportunities and for new business.

to either where possible reduce rates and paperwork or at the least to promote better services and infrastructure so all can enjoy our community.

more detail below on my hopes for the future listed below

Waikouaiti A Place with History

A very early settled community with colonists came on 1837 after whalers and of course the Māori who got here first. I about 1840 Matanaka was apparently Otago’s first farm with some buildings surviving to this day. The well known John Jones and family were living here from 1843. Much more information is available at www.wchc.org.nz and at the Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre 200 Main Road (entrance via Kildare street.Waikouaiti is a charming Rural town and a delight to live in .

Tourism has good potential for growth and Community Board should encourage this to help retain youth workers by giving employment. I have included at bottom of website a form where you can have your say especially ideas that should I be elected, I will pass onto board for consideration.

Most importantly have your say By Voting

My story

I was born in Dunedin in 1955 to parents who were farmers.Living in the country meant making our own entertainment in my case shortwave radio listening and Astronomy.which has become a life long passion.

I have worked on the Otago train trust, RNZAF and NZ POST Office and for the Last26 years owened the Mosgiel Computershop. I had lived with my sister Carolyn who Passed away on October 2023 The family home was sold and I have shifted to Live near My brother Gordon in Hawkesbury.

I am enjoying living in Waikouaiti Community with a Little minature fox terrer called Astro. On clear nights and with a new smart telescope I get to enjoy some of the darkest skies in NZ as I hope the photos on this site show. The glory of the heavens.

On a personal note, One of the reasons that I am motivated to ensure the Dunedin Hospital is that in 2017 I had a stroke from which thank God I am almost fully recovered from and understand the need to have access for the community to adequate medical resources. Also having type2 diabetes means I understand the teaching especially in schools healthy eating choices to reduce the cost to the community, by helping lay down healthy eating choices as early as possible and reduce the strain on our health resources. while perhaps out of the direct scope of the Waikouaiti Community Board duties they none the less be born in mind when considering Community planning.

My hobbies and interests are Astronomy, Ham radio (ZL4ARB), stamp collecting and keeping up with world events as we live in these interesting times. While I am a Christian and worship at the Hawkesbury Christian Fellowship, I know the Community Board is secular body and all voices in the community need to be heard in order for the Board to be effective. So please support my candidacy in this election and enable My experience to be used to the community benefit.

Thank You for your Support

After having lived in mosgiel for over 30 years I have now relocated to the Waikouaiti Community and been struck by the friendliness of the community. and would like to give my support to the community with my life experience.

  • I am keen to support the community businesses to get the message out as well as encourage employment for our youth to stop the drift out of the community for employment, as much as we can.

  • To encourage tourism making use of the beach in particular to promote the area.

  • As a pensioner I know the need for reliable and conveniently time public transport.

  • also road safety in Waikouaiti as with a highway going through the town and many people crossing the road. Some are just crossing to public toilets on other side i feel it would be good to have public toilets on both side of the road so distracted pedestrians don’t have accidents.

  • Additionally also as part of this website I have put a contact form below so you can let me know your ideas for the community and if elected would endeavor to pass onto the board to consider. Your ideas for Your community.

  • I would also be supporting the health services esp. the city hospital to pressure the government that it is up to size not only for current needs but for projected needs in next 25 years so money wont be wasted adding extensions within a couple of years.

  • If elected I will do my best to support and promote the Community
